Big ships don't dock at the Cabo San Lucas cruise port. They anchor in the bay near El Arco, and tender boats carry passengers 10 to 15 minutes to a landing just inside the marina, about a 15-minute walk from downtown and a short stroll from Medano Beach.
That shapes your whole day: getting ashore takes longer than a gangway, and getting back takes planning. Once you're on the dock, though, the marina, the town beach and the boats to Land's End are all close. Here's how tendering works, what's walkable, how to use a short port day and which documents to bring.
How the Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port Works
There's no cruise terminal at the Cabo San Lucas port. Large ships anchor in Cabo San Lucas Bay near Land's End because the harbor is too shallow (only small ships tie up in the marina), and up to four can anchor at once.
Tenders tie up at a long dock just inside the marina. You may ride the ship's own tenders, larger local boats or both. Excursion groups meet on the dock, and security may check bags near the exit. At the pier end you'll find ATMs, souvenir stands, bars, excursion sellers, water taxis and an information booth with free maps.
Getting Ashore: Tender Tickets, Lines and Timing
Tender tickets: Lines differ. In one recent cruiser's account, Carnival guests booked tender times in the app the day before, while Princess handed out numbered tickets that morning.
Who goes first: Ship excursion guests and priority tender holders can get ashore earlier.
The first hour is slowest: Lines of 15 to 30 minutes are common early, and that same cruiser waited about an hour and 15 minutes for her number. Lines are typically shorter after lunch.
The ride: Plan on 10 to 15 minutes each way.
Coming back: Usually no ticket needed, but you queue for the next available tender.
Weather: Wind and rough seas can delay or cancel tendering, so keep shore plans flexible.
What's Within Walking Distance of the Tender Pier
The marina: The waterfront walk passes fishing boats, yachts, restaurants and the Puerto Paraíso mall.
Downtown: About 15 minutes on foot along the marina. Shops and breakfast spots are usually open by 8 a.m.
Medano Beach: A short walk from the marina, or a water taxi from the pier. It sits inside the bay, sheltered from the Pacific swell, and it's a real swimming beach with kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis and parasailing. Vendors are persistent; a table set back from the sand means fewer pitches.
El Arco and Lover's Beach: Not walkable. Visit Los Cabos notes the arch is "accessible only by boat from Medano Beach or the Cabo San Lucas Marina." Water taxis and glass-bottom boats leave from the marina, and the hop to Lover's Beach takes about 10 minutes. Swim at Lover's Beach, not neighboring Divorce Beach, which gets rough surf. Wear water shoes: the sand gets hot and you may wade to the boat.

Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas on a Cruise Port Day
Cabo stops usually run 6 to 10 hours, some only 4 or 5, and tendering eats into both ends.
Booked ship excursion: The ship waits if a ship-sold tour runs late, and you'll often tender ashore first.
Going independent: More choice, but no guarantee the ship waits. Ask operators how they handle return times.
Good fits: a water taxi or glass-bottom boat to El Arco and Lover's Beach, then lunch downtown; a Medano beach day; or snorkeling, kayaking, sportfishing (the marina is a marlin hub) or winter whale watching.
Operators listed near the marina include Papillon Yachts Rental, a boat rental service on Blvd. Paseo de la Marina; Best Cabo Yachts, a boat rental service whose listing directs guests to Dock "O"; Cabo Sailing, a boat tour agency at Plaza Nautica; Sea Sports In Cabo, a boat tour agency on D Dock by Puerto Paraíso; KAYAK LOS CABOS clearyak, a kayak tour agency in the marina area; and Boats Baja Fishing Charters, a fishing charter on Marina A Dock. Downtown in Centro, Pete's Fish House is a seafood restaurant with dine-in and takeout, and Cactus Crafts and Souvenirs sells souvenirs on Francisco I. Madero.
Build in a real time buffer:
Know the last tender: Check when the last tender leaves, not just all-aboard time.
Line up early: Be in the return tender line at least 60 minutes before all-aboard.
Confirm the clock: Cabo runs on Mountain time, and your ship may keep its own. Ask which one applies.
Remember the stakes: Ships leave on schedule. Miss yours and reaching the next port is on you, at your expense.
Passports and Documents for a Cruise to Cabo San Lucas
A cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port is a closed-loop cruise.
The minimum: CBP says U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises can re-enter with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. A passport card or enhanced driver's license also works for sea re-entry, and U.S. citizen kids under 16 can generally sail on a birth certificate.
Your line can ask for more: The State Department notes a cruise line may require a passport book even when CBP doesn't. Check your booking documents.
Why a passport book is safer: The State Department strongly recommends one for every cruise passenger. A passport card works for returning by sea from Mexico, but not for flying. Miss the ship, or land in a hospital (in which case, the State Department warns, "the cruise ship may leave without you"), and you'll need a passport book to fly home or catch up. Without one, you'll need emergency documents from a U.S. embassy or consulate first.
What to carry ashore: Your ship card and photo ID. The State Department advises carrying your passport at all times and keeping color copies of the photo page as backup.
Money, Safety and Port Tips
Cash: U.S. dollars are widely accepted, though pesos are appreciated. Carry small bills for water taxis and vendors; there are ATMs at the marina. Confirm whether a price is in pesos or dollars.
Cards: Fine for bigger purchases, though some merchants add a surcharge.
Settle prices first: Agree on the fare before boarding any water taxi or glass-bottom boat, and check bills for drinks you didn't order.
Water and heat: Skip tap water and ice. Midday heat can be intense; taxis line up at the marina.
Beach flags: Green means safe to swim. Red or black means stay out.
Safety: The State Department rates Baja California Sur Level 2, exercise increased caution. Use official taxis and established operators, and see Is Cabo San Lucas Safe? The emergency number is 911.
Frequently Asked Questions

Large ships don't. They anchor in Cabo San Lucas Bay near Land's End, and tenders bring passengers to a landing inside the marina, about a 15-minute walk from downtown.
How long does the tender take in Cabo San Lucas?
The ride is 10 to 15 minutes. Early lines often take 15 to 30 minutes, sometimes over an hour, so pad both ends of your day.
Can you walk to the beach from the Cabo San Lucas cruise port?
Yes. Medano Beach is a short walk from the marina and calm enough to swim. Lover's Beach and El Arco are reached by water, about 10 minutes by water taxi.
What is there to do at the Cabo San Lucas cruise port?
Walk the marina and downtown, spend the day at Medano Beach, or take a boat out toward El Arco for sightseeing, snorkeling or fishing. Winter brings whale watching.
Do you need a passport for a cruise to Cabo San Lucas?
On a closed-loop cruise, U.S. citizens can re-enter with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID, unless the cruise line requires more. A passport book is still strongly recommended, since you'll need it to fly if you miss the ship.

The State Department rates Baja California Sur Level 2, exercise increased caution. Use official taxis and established operators, respect beach flags and leave plenty of time for the tender.

Only if your ship stays into the evening. Sunset sails and El Arco dinner cruises are offered, but they must finish before the last tender, so check your all-aboard time first.
