The San José del Cabo Art Walk happens every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. during its season, which runs from November through June. It's free, and it takes place in the Gallery District behind Plaza Mijares and the mission church, where Calle Obregón closes to cars and the galleries keep their doors open late.

Local gallery owners started the walk in 2006 to pull visitors off the main square and into the side streets. Here's how to time it, where to park, where to eat and what to do if you can't make a Thursday.

When the San José del Cabo Art Walk Runs

The Art Walk is a Thursday-only event, with galleries open from about 5 to 9 p.m. and some spots staying lively a bit later. Visit Los Cabos and most local guides give the season as November through June. The Gallery District Association's own 2024 to 2025 notice described an October to July run, so the edges can shift a little from year to year.

Last season's first walk was Thursday, November 6, 2025, the first Thursday of the month. If your trip lands in late October, early November or July, check the association's social pages for the 2026 to 2027 opening date before you plan an evening around it.

Where to Find the San José del Cabo Art District

The Art District (locals also call it the Gallery District) sits in the historic center of San José del Cabo, on the streets just behind Plaza Mijares and the mission church. The mission dates to the 1730s, and the blocks around it still have whitewashed buildings and cobblestone lanes.

Calle Álvaro Obregón is the main strip. The busiest stretch covers about two blocks between Calle Miguel Hidalgo and Calle Vicente Guerrero, and galleries continue onto Morelos, Comonfort, Guerrero and Hidalgo. On Thursday nights the city closes Obregón to car traffic, so you can walk down the middle of the street.

What to Expect on Art Walk Night

This is a stroll, not a ticketed show. Galleries stay open past their normal hours, many pour a complimentary glass of wine or tequila, and some save openings, artist appearances or live painting for Thursdays. Expect live music along the way, sometimes from a rooftop, and vendor stalls on the street.

    A few galleries you'll pass:

    • Galería de Ida Victoria: contemporary work by established and emerging artists from Mexico and abroad, plus an in-house framing studio.

    • Iván Guaderrama Art Gallery: an interactive space on Obregón that uses digital technology and immersive installations.

    • Galería Corsica: about two decades in the district, showing more than 50 contemporary Mexican artists.

    • Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery: open since 2008, known for richly colored landscapes and portraits, plus sculpture and serigraphs.

    • Frank Arnold, La Sacristía and Desertica: also listed among the Gallery District Association's member galleries.

Timing matters. Around 5 p.m. it's calmer and easier to chat with gallery staff. Things get busiest from roughly 6 to 8 p.m. Give yourself two to three hours if you want to see more than a handful of galleries.

Where to Eat Before or After

A good rhythm is galleries first, then a dinner reservation in the district for 8:30 or 9 p.m. as things wind down. Places near the galleries include La Lupita Taco & Mezcal (tacos and a long mezcal list), La Dolce (northern Italian), Jazmin's (tacos, Pacific seafood and margaritas), Los Tres Gallos and Baja Brewing Company for craft beer. Don Sanchez serves regional cooking with modern plating in the historic downtown. Book ahead in high season.

For a daytime gallery visit, CRUST Baja Baking Center is a bakery listed at Vicente Guerrero 12 in the Gallery District, with daytime hours on its listing, so think breakfast rather than Art Walk dinner. Es Por Ti Panadería is another bakery, listed on Blvd. Antonio Mijares with dine-in and takeout.

Getting There, Parking and Practical Tips

    • From Cabo San Lucas or the Corridor: Take the Transpeninsular Highway northeast. Plan on 30 to 40 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, less from most Corridor resorts, and longer in evening traffic. From the airport (SJD), it's about 15 to 25 minutes. A taxi or Uber saves you from hunting for parking near a pedestrian zone. See Los Cabos Airports and Getting Around for options.

    • Parking: Centenario, the street that runs behind downtown, is the usual place to leave a car and has room. Arrive before about 5:30 p.m. for an easier time.

    • What to wear: There's no dress code, and smart casual fits right in. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything because of the cobblestones.

    • Cash: Bring pesos. Not every gallery or vendor takes cards, and small bills are handy for tipping musicians or grabbing a taco on the way out.

    • Buying and shipping art: Owners tend to be relaxed, not pushy. For larger pieces, association galleries can usually pack, insure and ship for you at discounted rates. The association's shipping page says original art made in Mexico, the US or Canada has been exempt from US and Canadian duties, but reproductions don't qualify and handling fees can still apply. Confirm current rules with the gallery before you pay.

Visiting the Art District on Other Nights

Most galleries keep regular hours through the week (one guide lists 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily), though schedules vary. Weekdays are quieter and better for talking with owners and artists, and many galleries stay open in summer even without the official walk.

On Tuesday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m., Sabores San José turns the historic center into a walking food event with traditional music and folkloric dance. Confirm it's running during your dates. For other stops nearby, Plaza Artesanos is a shopping mall listed on Blvd. Antonio Mijares, and Tequila Tasting Experience at Cabo by Jorge Cuervo is listed at Blvd. Antonio Mijares 101 A.
