Where Is Los Cabos? Map, Time Zone, Passport and Travel Basics

Where is Los Cabos? It's at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, in the state of Baja California Sur. Los Cabos is a municipality with two main towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, linked by a roughly 20-mile coastal highway called the Tourist Corridor, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other.

That's the short answer. Below are the rest of the first-trip basics: a written map with real distances, the time zone (which changed in 2022), passport rules for flying and cruising, money, language and typical flight times.

    Where Is Los Cabos, Exactly?

Here's where Cabo San Lucas is located, from the big picture down to the towns:

    • Country: Mexico, not California. Los Cabos sits at the bottom of the Baja California peninsula, a strip of land roughly 1,000 miles long.

    • State: Baja California Sur, which covers the southern half of the peninsula below the 28th parallel. Its capital is La Paz. Don't confuse it with Baja California, the separate state to the north that includes Tijuana.

    • Municipality: Los Cabos. San José del Cabo is the seat of local government, while Cabo San Lucas is the bigger city. The 2020 census counted about 351,000 people in the municipality and about 203,000 in Cabo San Lucas.

    • Water: The Pacific Ocean lies to the west and the Sea of Cortez (also called the Gulf of California) to the east. The two meet at Land's End.

A Written Cabo San Lucas Map: Landmarks and Distances

Think of this as a map of Cabo San Lucas in words, from the tip outward:

    • Land's End and El Arco: The rocky tip, home to the famous stone arch. The arch and Lover's Beach are reachable only by boat, water taxi or kayak.

    • Cabo San Lucas: The busier town, with the marina, the nightlife and Medano Beach, its main swimming beach.

    • The Tourist Corridor: A four-lane highway of about 20 miles (33 km) between the two towns, with resorts, golf courses and beaches along the Sea of Cortez side.

    • San José del Cabo: The quieter town at the eastern end, known for its historic mission and arts scene.

    • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD): About 8 miles north of San José del Cabo and 23 miles from Cabo San Lucas, or roughly 45 minutes by road to Cabo San Lucas.

    • Cabo San Lucas International Airport (CSW): A small private airport about 8 km (5 miles) north of Cabo San Lucas that handles private jets and JSX flights.

    • Todos Santos: An artsy Pacific coast town, about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas by car.

    • La Paz: The state capital, on the Sea of Cortez, about 126 miles (202 km) north of Cabo San Lucas.

    • The US border: Federal Highway 1 runs about 1,063 miles from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas, so driving down takes several days.

For beach days, know that the Pacific side has strong surf and currents, while the Sea of Cortez side is calmer and better for swimming. For something printable, grab the official Los Cabos area, beach and hotel maps from Visit Los Cabos.

Cabo San Lucas Time Zone: No Daylight Saving Time

Cabo San Lucas runs on UTC-7 all year. Mexico's time zone law, in force since October 30, 2022, ended daylight saving time for most of the country. Only some northern border areas, including the state of Baja California, still change their clocks. Baja California Sur does not.

Mexico's law calls this the Pacific zone, though US sites usually label UTC-7 as Mountain Standard Time. Here's what time it is in Cabo San Lucas compared to home:

    • Arizona (most of the state): Same time as Cabo all year.

    • US Pacific time (Los Angeles): Same time as Cabo while the US is on daylight saving time (the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November). Cabo is one hour ahead the rest of the year.

    • US Central time (Chicago, Dallas): Two hours ahead of Cabo during US daylight saving time, one hour ahead in winter.

Do You Need a Passport to Go to Cabo San Lucas?

It depends on how you arrive:

    • Flying: Yes, and it must be a passport book. As the State Department puts it, "You need a passport book to fly to Mexico." A passport card won't get you on the plane. Make sure it's valid for your whole stay and has a blank page for the entry stamp. At the airport you'll receive a digital version of the FMM entry permit, and the immigration officer decides how long you can stay. A visa is only needed for stays over 180 days.

    • Cruising: On a closed-loop cruise (leaving from and returning to the same US port), US citizens can use an original or certified birth certificate with a raised seal, plus a government-issued photo ID for anyone 16 or older. Your cruise line may still require a passport, and the State Department strongly recommends carrying a passport book anyway in case an emergency means flying home.

Rules can change, so check the State Department's Mexico page before you go. It currently lists Baja California Sur at Level 2 (increased caution). For more on that, read our guide to whether Cabo San Lucas is safe.

    Currency and Language

    • Currency: Pesos are the local money, though plenty of businesses in Los Cabos take US dollars. Those dollars lose value in conversion. In February 2026, local outlet The Cabo Sun reported that exchange booths and resort desks give workers less than the official rate, so pesos are the better choice for tips.

    • Cards and ATMs: You can pay by card in plenty of places, but carry cash for local markets. ATMs work with US bank cards, though fees can be steep. Stick to bank ATMs, and if the machine offers to convert the charge for you, decline so your home bank handles the conversion.

    • Language: Spanish. A few basics like "hola," "gracias" and "la cuenta, por favor" go a long way.

How Long Is the Flight to Los Cabos?

Typical scheduled nonstop times to SJD, based on airline schedule data as of fall 2026:

    • Los Angeles (LAX): About 2.5 to 3 hours

    • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW): About 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes

    • Denver (DEN): About 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes

    • Chicago O'Hare (ORD): About 4.5 to 5 hours

    • New York (JFK): About 6 to 6.5 hours

Routes change often, so confirm with your airline when you book.
